Time Zone Calculator

Convert times between world time zones instantly

How to Use This Time Zone Calculator

  1. Enter the date and time you want to convert
  2. Select the time zone your time is currently in ('From')
  3. Select the target time zone you want to convert to ('To')
  4. Click 'Convert Time' to see the equivalent time
  5. Use 'Swap Time Zones' to quickly reverse the conversion

Example: A meeting at 3:00 PM Eastern Time (UTC-5) is 12:00 PM Pacific (UTC-8), 8:00 PM London (UTC+0), and 4:00 AM the next day in Tokyo (UTC+9). When scheduling, be aware the date may change across zones.

Tip: When scheduling across many time zones, pick a UTC time and let everyone convert to their local time. 15:00 UTC is unambiguous worldwide.

Why Use a Time Zone Calculator?

Global communication requires knowing what time it is elsewhere. A call scheduled for '10 AM' is meaningless without specifying the time zone. This converter prevents costly scheduling mistakes.

  • Schedule meetings with international teams
  • Coordinate product launches across markets
  • Plan travel and know arrival times in destination time zones
  • Set up international calls without waking someone at 3 AM
  • Understand when foreign markets open and close
  • Convert server logs or timestamps from different regions

Understanding Your Results

Results show the converted time in the destination zone, the UTC equivalent, the time difference in hours, and whether the date changes.

Same day

Meaning: Time converts within the same calendar date

Action: Simple scheduling - same day both places

+1 day

Meaning: Time crosses midnight going forward

Action: Your Monday afternoon is their Tuesday morning

-1 day

Meaning: Time crosses midnight going backward

Action: Your Tuesday morning is their Monday night

12+ hour difference

Meaning: Nearly opposite sides of Earth

Action: One party will be outside business hours

Note: This calculator uses fixed UTC offsets and doesn't adjust for Daylight Saving Time. During DST transitions, some zones may be 1 hour different than shown.

About Time Zone Calculator

Time zones divide Earth into regions with the same standard time, based on offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Moving east adds hours; moving west subtracts them. The International Date Line (roughly 180 degrees longitude) is where the calendar date changes. Some regions use half-hour (India at UTC+5:30) or 45-minute (Nepal at UTC+5:45) offsets. Time zones are political as well as geographical - China uses one zone despite spanning 5 geographic zones. For adding or subtracting time durations, use our calculate time differences. Planning international meetings that span multiple days? The date calculator helps determine dates across time zones.

Formula

Target Time = Source Time - Source Offset + Target Offset

Converting subtracts the source offset to get UTC, then adds the target offset. If the result is negative or exceeds 24 hours, the date changes accordingly.

Current Standards: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) replaced GMT as the world standard in 1972. UTC never observes Daylight Saving Time. Time zone abbreviations (EST, PST) can be ambiguous - UTC offsets (UTC-5, UTC-8) are precise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I handle Daylight Saving Time?

This calculator uses fixed UTC offsets. During DST, places like New York switch from EST (UTC-5) to EDT (UTC-4). You'll need to select the correct seasonal offset. Most of Arizona doesn't observe DST. Europe and the US change on different dates. Always verify for time-critical scheduling.

Why do some time zones have :30 or :45 offsets?

Historical, political, and practical reasons. India uses UTC+5:30 (between neighbors at +5 and +6). Nepal uses UTC+5:45 to be distinctive. Parts of Australia use +9:30 or +10:30. These odd offsets mean conversions aren't always whole hours.

What's the maximum time difference between two places?

26 hours. The Line Islands (UTC+14) and Baker Island (UTC-12) are 26 hours apart. When it's 10 AM Saturday in the Line Islands, it's 8 AM Friday on Baker Island. Practically, most populated areas span UTC-10 (Hawaii) to UTC+12 (New Zealand), a 22-hour range.

Why doesn't China have multiple time zones?

Political decision for national unity. China geographically spans 5 time zones but uses only Beijing Time (UTC+8) nationwide. This means dawn in western China can be as late as 10 AM clock time. Similarly, India uses one zone (UTC+5:30) despite its east-west span.

How do I schedule a meeting with people in 5+ time zones?

Find overlap in reasonable hours - usually 1-2 hour windows exist. Use a service like WorldTimeBuddy to visualize. For extreme cases, rotate meeting times so the same people aren't always inconvenienced. Recording meetings helps those who can't attend live.
